When I took a job as a residency coordinator in graduate medical education at a hospital, I made myself a promise: I will not date a resident. One of my dearest friends, a surgery resident, left the operating room briefly to.
While our general surgery residency honors the fundamentals of the classic curriculum, we also encourage our residents to pursue a specialized focus by enrolling in “selectives” that will tailor their education to specific interests and career goals. Unlike most large academic programs, Emory residents may complete five straight years of general surgery or do a research sabbatical in one of our high-profile research labs. Additionally, we support the pursuit of MBAs, MPHs, Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation, or PhDs, as these degrees can provide residents with the resources to pursue leadership roles in such fields as health administration, policy initiatives, and international health.
The Department’s emphasis on translating scientific breakthroughs into clinical application and care delivery allows our residents to become comfortable and skilled with the most up to date, innovative procedures. Unlike other major cities which typically have two or more institutions competing for patients, Emory is the only tertiary care, research-oriented medical center in Atlanta, a metropolitan area of over five million people.
Our seven impressive and distinct training facilities insure our access to this vast patient population. The location of Emory Surgery in a vibrant, multi-faceted, and ultimately inspirational campus community grounds our residency program in a culture of interaction and cross-collaboration. The Emory medical community also has close ties with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Cancer Society, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and other research institutions throughout the state and nation.

Dating in surgical residency
At the University of Kansas KU , we believe that we have responded to these changes with a program that is well rounded with both an excellent clinical experience combined with a state of the art didactic teaching program. Our clinical experience includes a number of hospitals in addition to our primary facility, the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.
The Residents’ experience is divided into both “team” rotations and opportunities to work alone on several of the specialty services. The rotations that allow the resident the opportunity to work “solo” include the Colorectal, HPB Hepatobiliary , Breast, Cardiothoracic, and Pediatric surgery services. The 4th year of Training is a unique and enjoyable year in our Residents’ education. It consists of a rotation at community hospitals in a moderate sized Kansas community providing the Resident an opportunity to participate in private practice and to train with excellent general surgeons outside of the traditional teaching hospital setting.

Dating is pretty daunting. Dating someone in a surgical residency program or really, ANY residency is something of a myth. Surgeon and I met during his 2nd year of residency. I seriously had no idea what I was getting into back then. After my first formal date with Surgeon, it got not-so-formal. More dinner dates happened at the hospital than anywhere else.
In the end, your where-to-have-a-date question should be: where can I spend the most time with this person? And then, DO IT, no matter how weird it seems. I mean, yes, it is. By the first month, I knew a dinner date meant me cooking, packing and cleaning up afterwards only to spend 30 minutes eating with Surgeon.

Thinking About Dating A Medical Resident? They’re Worth It, But There Are A Few Things You Should Know Before You Take The Plunge.
Residency or postgraduate training is specifically a stage of graduate medical education. In many jurisdictions, successful completion of such training is a requirement in order to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine, and in particular a license to practice a chosen specialty. An individual engaged in such training may be referred to as a resident , registrar or trainee depending on the jurisdiction.
Residency training may be followed by fellowship or sub-specialty training. Whereas medical school teaches physicians a broad range of medical knowledge, basic clinical skills, and supervised experience practicing medicine in a variety of fields, medical residency gives in-depth training within a specific branch of medicine. A resident physician is more commonly referred to as a resident , senior house officer in Commonwealth countries , or alternatively, a senior resident medical officer or house officer.
Residents are, collectively, the house staff of a hospital. This term comes from the fact that resident physicians traditionally spend the majority of their training “in house” i. Duration of residencies can range from three years to seven years, depending upon the program and specialty. A year in residency begins between late June and early July depending on the individual program and ends one calendar year later.
In the United States, the first year of residency is known as an internship with those physicians being termed “interns”. Depending on the number of years a specialty requires, the term junior resident may refer to residents that have not completed half their residency.
